Turkish Delights: A World Cuisine Masterclass
The International Diplomatic Spouses Association (IDSA) kicked off its World Cuisine Masterclass series with a vibrant celebration of Turkish culture at the residence of Ambassador Nilvana and Murat.
Guests enjoyed tea and conversation before diving into hands-on cooking, shaping simit, skewering Adana kebabs, and savoring fragrant red lentil soup under the guidance of Chef Yunus. The afternoon ended sweetly with Turkish delight.
The launch raised R9 250 for IDSA’s initiatives and welcomed IDSA Patron Mrs. Winny Lamola, alongside four young women from the Young Urban Women’s Movement, fostering cultural exchange and community engagement.
Ambassador Nilvana and Murat’s hospitality made the day unforgettable, transporting attendees to Istanbul and setting a high benchmark for the series.

The International Diplomatic Spouses Association (IDSA) in Pretoria enjoyed a day filled with flavour and friendship.
Members gathered at the Singapore Residence for a hands on pineapple tart baking class, graciously led by Madam Wong, visiting from Singapore. Alongside the iconic tarts, participants sampled Kueh Bangkit and Butter Cake, an authentic taste of Singapore, thoughtfully organised and hosted to perfection by Jennifer.
The gathering was a delightful celebration of culture and connection, reminding members of the joy found in sharing traditions, learning together, and strengthening the bonds of friendship within the IDSA community.

Savoring Chinatown: Friendship, Flavor and Fun
The International Diplomatic Spouses Association (IDSA) spent a vibrant day exploring Chinatown, thanks to the thoughtful organization of Dee and Jennifer. Every detail of the outing was carefully planned, ensuring members enjoyed a seamless and memorable experience.
From sipping refreshing bubble tea to browsing fascinating shops filled with unique treasures, the group delighted in the cultural richness of the area. A delicious meal at a local restaurant, paired with outstanding service, was another highlight of the day. The visit ended on a sweet note with irresistible treats from Lee’s cake shop.
Jennifer’s strategic planning and Dee’s warm hospitality made the experience truly special. Even small touches, like providing individual water bottles for the van ride, showcased the care and thoughtfulness behind the event.
The day in Chinatown was not only an enjoyable cultural excursion but also another reminder of the connection and friendship that define IDSA gatherings.
Behind the Blooms: IDSA Visits Multiflora Flower Auction
The International Diplomatic Spouses Association (IDSA) visited Multiflora, Africa’s only flower auction, for a behind-the-scenes look at the vibrant world of flowers.
Guided by Paul and Bert, members observed the careful grading and sorting of blooms and witnessed a fast-paced digital auction in action. Despite the large volume, nearly every flower finds an owner by early morning.
The visit ended with each guest receiving a bouquet, a lasting reminder of the passion, skill, and dedication behind the flower trade. The day was made possible by Jennifer, whose thoughtful planning and leadership ensured an unforgettable experience for the IDSA community.
Blossoms of Friendship at IDSA
The International Diplomatic Spouses Association (IDSA) hosted a delightful flower garland workshop, where a small group of members gathered to explore the art of floral design.
The session began with a live demonstration, followed by each participant creating their own unique garland. No two were alike; each reflected personal style and creativity, woven together with vibrant blooms and thoughtful touches.

Beyond Recipes: Experiencing Kazakhstan Through Food and Friendship
The International Diplomatic Spouses Association (IDSA) had the privilege of gathering at the Embassy of Kazakhstan for an extraordinary culinary experience led by Master Chef Gulnara. What began as a cooking lesson quickly unfolded into a cultural journey, blending fine cuisine, tradition, and heartfelt hospitality.
Under Chef Gulnara’s patient guidance, members learned to prepare traditional Kazakh dishes, Manty and Samsa, with every step demonstrated with care and generosity. The cooking process was meticulously orchestrated, allowing participants to master the techniques before sharing a beautifully prepared meal.
The day was a testament to cultural diplomacy at its finest, as flavors and traditions brought people together in unity. The feast included aromatic Samsa fresh from the oven, a honey cake lovingly prepared by Chef Gulnara, and exquisite handmade chocolates gifted to each guest.
What made the event truly memorable was not only the food but the warmth of the Kazakhstan Embassy, whose hospitality made everyone feel at home. Members left with more than just recipes; they carried with them the joy of shared learning, cultural exchange, and cherished memories.
As one participant reflected: “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn. Today, we didn’t just learn recipes—we experienced Kazakhstan.”

Flavors of Friendship at Food Lover’s Market
The International Diplomatic Spouses Association (IDSA) had the privilege of experiencing a unique and unforgettable tour of Food Lover’s Market at Castle Gate, led by honorary member Desirée Gastaldi. From the moment members stepped inside, the ambiance transported them to New York, setting the tone for an exceptional day.
Guests were treated to a delicious culinary journey, beginning with refreshingly sweet yellow watermelon, followed by homemade beef Mumbai sausage and boerenkaas with fig sauce. The highlight of the tasting was the banana bread, made with real butter, which proved to be a crowd favorite. The experience concluded with sushi and golden cheese-and-corn pockets, leaving members with a lasting impression of flavor and hospitality.
What made the day even more special was the dedication of the Food Lover’s Market staff, who warmly guided the group through departments, generously sharing their knowledge and answering questions. Their respect and admiration for Desirée were evident, reflecting the strong culture of care she has nurtured within the company.
Special thanks also go to Jennifer, whose eye for discovering South African treasures and skill in organizing flawless experiences once again ensured a smooth and enriching outing for IDSA members.

A Garden of Our Own: IDSA’s Paper Flower Workshop
The International Diplomatic Spouses Association (IDSA) gathered for a unique and inspiring workshop at Flora Mystique, beautifully arranged by Jennifer. Surrounded by a vibrant jungle of blooms, members immersed themselves in the art of crafting giant paper flowers, an experience that was as challenging as it was rewarding.
Guided by the talented Lori, participants watched in awe as she shaped and styled petals with precision and grace, her tools moving as naturally as an artist’s brush. While the flowers appeared effortless in their elegance, members quickly learned the craft required patience, precision, and a steady hand with the glue gun.
The room was filled with laughter, creativity, and admiration as bold, colorful flowers began to take shape. Each participant brought their own flair, and the results were nothing short of spectacular. For many, the experience offered a new appreciation for the complexity and beauty of flowers, both real and handmade.
The workshop left members not only with showstopping creations but also with lasting memories of connection, creativity, and shared accomplishment.

Sustainability in Bloom: IDSA Visits PicoGro
IDSA members visited PicoGro, a microgreen and specialty leaf farm near Johannesburg, to explore sustainable farming practices. The group toured the farm, collected edible flowers, and even used them to decorate a cake, bringing their learning to life creatively and deliciously.
The visit reinforced IDSA’s commitment to education, sustainability, and empowering members to make informed, impactful choices.
Women Driving Impact: IDSA Joins the Conversation
IDSA had the privilege of attending the Women Leading Change Summit in Bryanston. Under the theme “Power in Leadership”, the summit brought together women from around the world to showcase how leadership is shaping economies, communities, and opportunities for change.
The program featured panels on digital innovation, climate resilience, inclusive growth, and SME empowerment, highlighting how women leaders are driving meaningful impact. For IDSA, attending the summit was a wonderful opportunity to connect, learn, and reaffirm its mission of empowering women and fostering spaces where they can lead and inspire.
Reflections on the Long Walk to Freedom
The International Diplomatic Spouses Association (IDSA) recently visited the Liliesleaf Museum, a landmark of South Africa’s struggle for freedom and democracy. Organized by Activities Chair Jennifer, the outing offered members a deeply enriching and thought-provoking experience.
Through carefully curated exhibits and historical insights, the visit illuminated South Africa’s long and difficult journey to freedom. For many members, it was both a moving educational opportunity and a reminder of the resilience, courage, and sacrifice that shaped the nation’s democratic path.
The day concluded with a delicious shared meal and time for shopping, adding warmth and fellowship to the reflective experience.
